Early Teal Season Tips

Teal, we meet again by Keith Sutton
If you haven't tried teal hunting yet, you should.
Duck hunting often reminds us of numb toes, frozen fingers and rosy cheeks. You won't be cold, however, during a September teal hunt. An early-season foray for blue-winged, green-winged and/or cinnamon teal usually is a shirtsleeve affair where sweat runs freely and mosquitoes substitute for snowflakes. read more...

The Fundamentals of Blind Retrieves

The Fundamentals of Blind Retrieves by Mike Stewart
One of the most exhilarating and rewarding aspects of developing a finished waterfowl retriever is training the dog to run blinds, that is to pick up birds the dog didn't see fall. Little else in the gun dog world will equal the thrill of being directly involved with a retriever, one on one, as the dog boldly goes out to a fall area to locate an unseen bird under complete control, returning promptly to make a retrieve to hand. Successful blinds are a visible statement to anyone's training efforts. read more...

May 15th, 2008 - Southeastern Saskatchewan is Dry
Posted by on 2008-05-21 13:10:30 CDT
The CWS crew and I have begun working on survey's in the south-eastern part of Saskatchewan. Conditions here have not changed much compared to what we saw in Manitoba - it's very dry. However there is noticeably more water in the large, permanent wetlands than we saw in Manitoba. During our survey, we classify wetlands based on water depth, types of vegetation associated with the wetland and estimated permanency of the wetland. These range from a type 1 pond which is only inches deep and typically don't last longer than three weeks, to a type 5 pond that is deep and will last throughout the year. We also classify artificial wetlands, dugouts, borrow pits, gravel pits etc. Typically these hold water even in dry years, but are far less productive than natural wetlands. read more...

The Aviator 3D has the added feature of full body motion. A motion stake allows the Aviator 3D to rock forwards and backwards as well as pivot side to side. No rechargable batteries or charger to buy. 3 "AA" batteries power the Aviator 3D for an entire day. It comes complete with 2 motion stakes for field use. A half inch conduit (not included) will raise the Aviator 3D for greater visibility or for use over deeper water. The Aviator 3D provides a fresh, new look to a spinner on a pole and the ducks love it!!! Click HERE for more information.

Revive Your Retriever
Hard to imagine that same yellow dog sprawled on your kitchen floor was just months ago an awesome force in the duck marsh. He will be this season, too, with just a little summertime work.
A primary concern should be getting your pup in peak physical condition. Long walks and lots of water retrieves will help keep him toned up through the summer. Water work not only serves as excellent exercise, but also keeps your dog enthusiastic about retrieving.
